Hosting at Home vs. Renting a Banquet Hall in Buffalo, NY: Which Is Actually Cheaper?

Hosting at home is usually cheaper for a small, casual gathering when you are cooking the food, using your own furniture, and handling setup and cleanup yourself.
Renting a banquet hall can be the better value for a larger or more formal event. The venue cost is higher upfront, but you may avoid separate costs for tables, chairs, parking, weather protection, staff support, and event cleanup.
The right choice depends on your guest count, event type, food plans, and how much work you want to handle yourself.
Is hosting at home cheaper for a small party?
Yes, usually. Home is often the lower-cost option for approximately 20 to 40 guests, especially when the event is informal.
Home may work well if you can:
Prepare the food yourself or organize a potluck
Use your own tables and chairs
Keep decorations simple
Host indoors without renting a tent
Ask family or friends to help with setup
Complete the cleanup yourself
Keep the event shorter
For example, a birthday party for 25 people may only require groceries, drinks, paper products, decorations, and a cake. If your home already has enough seating and parking, you may not need much else.
The main cost is your time. You are responsible for preparing the space, arranging the food, managing trash, helping guests, and cleaning everything afterward.
That work is manageable for a small gathering. It becomes more difficult as the guest list grows.
What does hosting an event at home actually cost?
A home event does not have a venue rental fee, but there are still several expenses to include.
Food and catering
DIY food is usually the most affordable option. A potluck can reduce the food budget further, depending on what guests bring.
Professional catering costs more. Buffalo-area event research commonly places full-service catering in the range of approximately $60 to $150 per person, depending on the menu, staffing, and service style.
For 50 guests, that can mean:
$3,000 at $60 per person
$7,500 at $150 per person
You would pay for catering whether the event is at home or in a venue. The difference is what happens around the food. At home, you may still need to arrange serving tables, trash removal, food storage, and cleanup.
Tables, chairs, and linens
Your home may not have enough seating for everyone. You may need to rent:
Tables
Chairs
Tablecloths
Serving tables
Dinnerware
Glassware
Outdoor tents
Heaters or fans for outdoor events
For 40 or more guests, these rentals can add several hundred dollars. An outdoor event can cost more once you include a tent, lighting, weather protection, and additional equipment.
Parking and restrooms
Parking is easy to overlook. Ask where guests will park, especially if your street has restrictions or limited space.
For a larger outdoor event, you may also need additional restroom facilities. That is another cost that does not appear in the original “free venue” calculation.
Setup and cleanup
At home, setup and cleanup are usually included in the cost of your own time.
You may need several hours before the event to move furniture, arrange tables, prepare food, and decorate. Afterward, someone must wash dishes, remove trash, clean floors, and return the home to normal.
If you hire cleaners, add that cost to the home-event budget.
What does a banquet hall cost in Buffalo, NY?
Banquet hall prices vary by location, guest count, time of day, event type, and what is included.
Current Buffalo-area listings show a wide range. For example, listings on Eventective’s Buffalo party venue directory include options from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars for approximately 50 guests.
Those listings are useful for comparison, but they are not all the same type of package. Some include food or staffing. Others are mainly a room rental. Always ask for a complete quote.
At The Mahogany in Tonawanda, current rental information lists:
EJ Room, first floor: rentals start at $1,000 for 6 hours
Jewel Room, second floor: rentals start at $1,200 for 6 hours
Refundable damage deposit:$300
Additional time: $100 per hour for the EJ Room or $150 per hour for the Jewel Room
The EJ Room accommodates up to 117 guests. The Jewel Room accommodates up to 200 guests. You can review the room details and capacities here.

What is included with a banquet hall rental?
This depends on the venue. Do not assume that every banquet hall includes the same items.
At The Mahogany, the rental includes:
Tables with black covers
Chairs with black covers
Internet
Sanitize cleaning before your event
Day-of assistance from the owner or a staff member
Rear off-street parking
The venue also has a prep room with stainless steel prep tables, an industrial sink, and a refrigerator/freezer. Cooking and stove use are not available.
Outside vendors are permitted. You can bring your own DJ, florist, lighting company, food vendor, or other approved service providers. This gives you more control over the budget.
Please note that setup and breakdown time count toward your rental hours. There is no free setup or breakdown period. If you need the room from 3 p.m. through 11 p.m., your rental must cover that full time.
The venue currently closes at 11 p.m., and the building must be fully exited and returned in an orderly condition by that time. Review the complete The Mahogany FAQ before booking.
Is a banquet hall cheaper for 50 guests?
It may be, depending on your home-event costs.
For a simple comparison, The Mahogany’s 6-hour room rental works out to approximately:
Guest count | EJ Room at $1,000 | Jewel Room at $1,200 |
50 guests | $20 per guest | $24 per guest |
75 guests | $13.33 per guest | $16 per guest |
100 guests | $10 per guest | $12 per guest |
These figures cover the room rental only. Food, decorations, entertainment, alcohol, and other services are additional.
However, the rental also gives you a dedicated event space, tables, chairs, parking, and staff assistance. You do not need to move your living room furniture or manage guests in a residential space.
For 50 guests, home may still be less expensive if you cook, use your own furniture, and clean afterward. If you hire a caterer and rent most of your equipment, the difference becomes smaller.

When is a banquet hall the better value?
A banquet hall usually becomes more practical when you have 50 to 100 or more guests, or when the event requires a more organized setup.
A venue may be the better value when you need:
Seating for most or all guests
A separate dance or activity area
Reliable indoor space during Buffalo weather
On-site parking
A professional setting for a wedding reception
Space for a DJ, buffet, gift table, or dessert table
Staff assistance during the event
A clear start and end time
A location outside your home
The venue also protects your home from increased foot traffic, spills, furniture movement, and post-event cleaning.
For wedding receptions, anniversaries, holiday events, and larger birthday parties, those practical benefits can matter as much as the rental price.
What about alcohol and outside vendors?
At The Mahogany, you may bring and serve alcohol to your guests, but renters may not sell alcohol themselves.
A $125 corkage fee applies when outside alcohol is brought onto the premises. If you want a cash bar, notify the venue in advance so bar service can be arranged.
Outside vendors are allowed. This can help you compare prices for food, music, decorations, photography, and other services.
The Mahogany also has an in-house photography and photobooth service through Khari Imagery. Having professional photography available in the same building may simplify planning for weddings, birthdays, and milestone events.
How should you compare the two options?
Use the same checklist for both choices.

So, which is actually cheaper?
Home is usually cheaper for a small, informal event with DIY food and limited rentals.
A banquet hall may be the better value for larger, formal, or fully catered events, especially when you include equipment rentals, parking, setup, cleanup, and your own time.
For your specific event, compare the complete cost instead of comparing only “free at home” with the venue rental price.
Start with your guest count, event date, food plan, and desired event hours. Then request a banquet hall quote and compare every line item.
